reworking a big tune is never a simple task, especially if after 7 years the tune in question is still one of the highlights in shows of one of the worlds most beloved live act performers, kink. that s only half of the story though, as the tune got a lot of love from so many dj s all over the globe. however, for the 17th burek release, we wanted to do something really special and what could be better than giving new life to a piece of music which literally gave life to our label. and we gathered some very interesting people for the job.

external assessment vs. self-conception by robag wruhme: people always think, im that serene and quiet guy, but actually i’m quite a noisemaker. could be that the majority of the material he put out in recent years, most notably the thora vukk album, led to the overall apprehension of robag being the virtuoso of everything subtle, enigmatic and tenderly melodic. well, thats far from being a misconception, but still just one side of the coin. the other side is embossed with his most current productions, consolidated to a double ep, captioned with the enchanting name wuzzelbud ff. wait a second wuzzelbud devoted fans will instantly prick up their ears. we’ve heard that before. back in 2004 robag wruhme released his first longplayer named wuzzelbud kk. as theres no such scenario robag might be running out of stream-of-consciousness turned nonsense titles for his music, this must be a vocabulary intersection linking the early days of his career with its status quo. and it is. wruhme presents wuzzelbud ff as the stylistic follow-up to his debut album, showcasing a sound he commits has been neglected for too long. wruhme cuts to the chase: i wanted to put out some straightforward music for the dancefloor, something for the primetime. well, for the primetime of my sets, at least.

when looking for music to be released on magazine, our guideline has always been energy. the key question remains the same: does the artist have something important to say? does it have a sense of urgency? alex played us these tracks while visiting the magazine studio in cologne earlier this year and we were consumed by unadulterated rage. this is anything but a conceptual release, alex has not released this kind of music before. a side of alex manifests itself through these techno tracks, that most might not have known before. brutal yet beautiful, furious yet fragile. a berlin native who shaped his sense for techno by striving through his hometown and its infamous raves, alex is now one of the prominent protagonists of that scene – not only when regularly playing at berghain. the ep harnesses this experience perfectly, fully preserving the energy of the creation process by recording directly to tape. most productions may have suffered from this primitive method of locking sound into position, but not these tracks from a techno master.

"texas-based electronic music producer phillip washington aka cygnus was on bit of a hiatus since his phenomenal -cosmos- long play on fundamental records, released near the end of 2016. with this ep, titled -ne0 ge0-, he s breaking the silence and we re extremely happy to see it happening through barba imprint. the record consists of 4 cuts; -zone shifting-, -vertexing-, -ne0-ge0- and -astronoot- which all share common qualities of his previous work - deep, spacey, richly textured and really well crafted. -zone shifting- is what electro in 2018 should sound like. deep, emotional and futuristic but well grounded in the human condition through the vocal line which seems to haunt from the distance. -vertexing- is a slightly more paced, moodier affair with slow enveloping vangelis-esque synth lines bleeding all over traditional electro sounding beat. however, in this case that s exactly what s needed. title track, -ne0-ge0- is the first one on the flip side and the busiest one. creasing of multiple synth lines and pads is done in such an expertly elegant manner that you just can t resist but play it loud on a big soundsystem and see what it does to the dancefloor. and finally, record closes with -astronoot-, and as b2 tracks usually are - it s the deepest of them all, reserved for those heady moments when you need something to bring the magic to the next level."

following on from 2017s experimentally-focused ep, nucleus axon finds phantasy regular ghost culture return with an urgent, pristine slice of club euphoria, backed by a standout remix from legowelt. the original version of axon powers ahead with a supremely physical bassline and a ghostly atmosphere that s slathered with atmospheric choral touches, contrasted by punching, powerful drums. each perfectly tuned element weaves a seriously impressive spell of charismatic, contemporary electro. axons original form is then driven underground and transformed into something truly psychedelic at the hands of legendary producer and synth legend, legowelt. coaxing out one of his distinctive acid lines, the hague resident unravels a heady, hazy atmosphere of creeping euphoria amid a spectral, twilight groove.

and now for something completely different … cgi is extremely excited to present the proof of concept ep from shanghai-via- chicago’s osheyack. these are productions with a weight and freshness that we at cgi have not previously encountered. while on a small us tour in june 2016, osheyack played a set in atlanta and thoroughly blew everyone in the room away with a mastery of rhythm, sound, and arrangement that is uncanny. we approached osheyack after the gig for demos and what we received was as dense and inspiring as the live set. words don’t do this sound justice but it’s perhaps most fun to close your eyes and imagine a demonic cirque-du-soleil-esque techno marching band stomping through the graveyard of your dreams and resurrecting all of the wasted souls to stomp on their graves in a frenzied trance...

superb, heartwarming and spirit lifting gospel disco modern soul 45 first released in 1978 on philadelphia united records. calvin carr & company are enriched with sensitivity and alive with the spirit. the kind of gospel that sweeps all over you and runs through your veins. there is always a sense of inadequacy when attempting to describe just how good something is. words like exciting, inspiring and original come to mind but as always you will have to decide for yourself

that summer i developed somewhat of an obsession with tonto’s expanding head band after having seen them perform at the big chill festival that year. the music blew my mind. later upon my return to civilisation and the ensuing research which then began in earnest i became as much blown away by the enormous t.o.n.t.o. (the original new timbral orchestra) modular synthesizer that had created the music as i was by the music itself. built in the early 70s, it s still the largest synthesizer around today. with the live show still resonating in my head i tracked down everything tonto had ever recorded. one of these tracks was an obscure outtake from the time t.o.n.t.o.’s creators, malcolm cecil and robert margouleff, were producing and engineering for stevie wonder in the ‘70s(https://youtu.be/wuaszff7yq0). the track, bittersweet, only ever appeared on a highly limited self-released cd put together to coincide with their appearance at the big chill. consequently i featured it on a few mixes i did over the years and invariably i’d be asked “what’s that track?” by those with an ear for something unique. and invariably these same people, many of them djs, would turn away disgruntled when i informed them it was cd only. although i didn t know it at the time, the seed was definitely sown for this vinyl compilation that you now hold in your hands.

there is some serious music coming out of nz right now and has been for a while and these tracks are of no exception. this ep has a very sonically pleasing sound about it all coated with an industrial vibe. from a main room club banger right through to the early morning dark twisted -i have had way too much of a good night- tracks this ep really does push the boundaries and brings something new and refreshing to the table.

under cover for many years, this affie yusuf two tracker finally sees the light of day on the acclaimed mindyourhead imprint. comes on a generally deep green, mixed colour marbled 12’’ vinyl. affie yusuf paved the way uk acid house scene and so much more, releasing techno and acid throughout his career. mindyourhead records recognises that sometimes you need to look a little bit into the past to move ahead and has re-launched the label with this vinyl only release. ‘parrot soup’ is a fine example of just how a track title can have absolutely no relevance to the music whatsoever. this is a lovingly constructed example of how to convey images with sound, this music renders images brimming with joy and loss, icy cold chills and the warmth of the first rays of sun on a spring morning. tight, punchy drums with crisp 808 snares and driving toms lovingly complimented with dream-like pad sequences, soul searching strings and lush bassline form a quality crossover track that will appeal to lovers of many styles of techno and house. ‘something special’ is on a different tip, more driving and direct in style with the ‘everybody…’/ ‘something special’ vocal samples put to great use (need to be heard in context!) and that essential marching ‘affie acid’ bassline. the lead follows a similar pattern to the acid but pulls your head in a slightly different direction leaving the listener suitably twisted!! this proper ‘party acid’ has just the right level of balls to destroy a dancefloor without scaring off the faint of heart. lovely work affie!!

“monstrance” is mika vainio & joachim nordwall’s first album together and was originally released june 2013 via touch (to:88). it consist of drone works and pulsating electronic minimalism but also guitar, acoustic elements, organs and metal percussion. it was recorded in einstürzende neubauten’s berlin studio during an intense session in early summer of 2010. “monstrance” is a place where vainio’s and nordwall’s backgrounds as musicians and composers meet, and something new and extremely powerful is born. something deep, raw and direct…

nathan micay (formerly bwana) steps out under his own name for the first time with a pair of glistening panoramas well-primed for those exultant hours of the early morning. the 12inch opens with first casualty, aka that track played by avalon in her printworks set last year, before heading into deeper territories with beginning ballads on the flip. in nathans words: these are without a doubt the most personal tracks i have written to date. i made them as a sort of exercise in self-therapy during my first few months in berlin. as time has gone on, more meanings have unfolded with each listen. for me, these tracks are a rebuttal to the endless churn of negativity in the news and online. they have become my battle cry in the club, something to mobilize while also offering a chance to escape it all, even briefly.

repress incoming! a blast from the past... one of the most iconic tracks from the noir music back-catalogue makes a remixed revival. 3 impressive remixes to spice up your dj sets. victor ruiz makes bipolar star a fantastic big room techno stomper with his signature sound and just the right amount of melody from the original to make it recognizable. re:axis almost makes the track unrecognicable with a more minimal techno approach. something i am sure will please the forefront of the underground techno scene. animal picnic & aaryon almost pays tribute to the original with their very cool update keeping a lot of the original feel but cleverly tweaked the elements to sound super fresh again. i believe there’s a little something for everyone in this remix package which was the purpose behind doing it instead of a bunch of remixes sounding the same. i hope you like the new remixes and put “bipolar star” right back into rotation.

dusty archives, the backrooms of record stores, private reel to reel stashes, master tapes - these are the environs of the dynamic range experience. dynamic range is a new label focused on unearthing deep soul, funk and disco jams that continue to resonate with todays dancers and dj’s. time spent scouring the bowels of the majors and independents has unsurprisingly resulted in numerous gems being added to the dr wants list. high quality, fully licensed reissues are the order of the day, always taken from the correct master source and re-presented to hungry record heads the world over. to repeat, this is a fully legit operation avoid the sharks at all costs! the debut release on the label is a real doozy new birth, the mighty detroit funk outfit who operated from 1970 onwards are first up to bat. their late 70s rarity deeper is a real monster lifted from their killer behold the mighty army lp. produced by legendary motown stalwart frank wilson this is some straight-up disco-fied funk for sure! one of those solid, mid-tempo groovers that just ignites a dance-floor at any time, any place. side-a is the glorious full-side disco mix and were treated to the full instrumental version on the flip. no lazy edits here, just the full funk and nothing but the funk, just as the group intended! this is one of many soulful treats that dynamic range will be presenting in the coming months, stay tuned for more - aint it something?.

killer, cosmic leaning german funk-rock moves here on the repress tip courtesy of epsilon, a 4 piece from marburg, just north of frankfurt. that kind of grooved out, downtempo dusted glam type of gear that one might hear dj harvey play at wrong o clock in the morning, or something that loda might flip into mid-set that would have everyone scratching their head in disbelief. one of a handful of cool jams the epsilon guys cranked out, remastered and repressed on a lovely, handy 45. sounds heavy. essential listening for those of a more left-field disposition. dig it.

bjarki returns to &#1090,,,,&#1088,,,,&#1080,,,,&#1087,,,, with another ep brandishing five restructured doses of idm from another galaxy. using marching kick drums as a basis, oli gumm takes references from techno, gabber and trance and morphs them into something far less easy to categorise. ‘oli gumm 2-2’ switches frantically between glistening synth cascades and bouncing kicks. ‘fork2-2’ is a subdued excursion through ominous, trance-inducing strings and skeletal percussion. opening the b side, ‘7 filakaramellur lion bar’ spirals through warped vocals and acoustic contortions, followed by ‘hatann satann’, a high speed voyage through a demonic parallel universe. closing off the ep, ‘sleikjó’ uses rolling drums to circle around a pit of sparse sonic oddities.

dan stielow mortazavi has an outer edged family background and a long testament in music starting in his teens with his first recorded project the product that was self released to cassette back in 1983. three decades later it saw a vinyl release on the dark entries label. the debut spite cathedral lp is made with his long-time musical partner karsten svendsen (to feed on others, hinsidan, ate23) and is released with a free bonus 7” on bodies on july 2nd. ultra minimalism streaming from the darkest of places still with a presence of a cold, cold love. with sparse elements they create dramatic scenery. industrial beats backed with something that sounds like hostage jazz and rock drummers fused with the loneliest of themes, epic at times and oh so broken at others. touching topics of man’s inhumanity, paranoid misinterpretations, the fragility of the mind, sex and broken homes without mouthing a single word.

following on from angophora s beautiful long player, ken oath is back with another full length lp from low flung. friends of the label will note that this is his third release for ken oath, and it s a fittingly mature and expansive statement for a debut lp. perhaps mature is the wrong word here, as all his brilliant ideas are backed up by a sense of whimsy that betrays his playful side. the music strikes a balance between styles and spaces that could perfectly soundtrack moments at home, in the club, and in the liminal spaces between. danny s efforts at writing dance music still contain the idiosyncratic approaches of his ambient works: the deadly deep subs and endless echo spirals on -rising damp- sounds like someone trying to piece together a drum & bass track after an off-hand conversation about the genre. he s transmuted the propulsive energy of jungle into something no less dynamic, full of stops and starts and sonic pressure but flush with space. -tarp climber- is at heart a rollicking digi-dub. the more ambient moments of the lp are equally captivating - the glassy tones of -frozen coat- sound like a space-age ensemble soundtracking a floating lounge on a suite of glass instruments, while -ocean grove- blends field recordings and dreamy synthesizer melodies to create an uncanny sense of place that unroots you from wherever you re listening. there s a heavy emphasis on danny s collaborators as well - the cold emotion duo is reprised on the spacey ‘hills hoist’. closer -bacchus marsh- is a collaboration with prophets, a cross-state ensemble that defy any easy categorisation. the music here flirts with jazz and minimalism but with a dubwise production aesthetic to produce something that recalls khan jamal s visionary -drum dance to the motherland- in spirit and practice, but this whole album sounds as otherworldly and one-of-a-kind as the aforementioned lp.

it sounded all right through two walls, so what s the problem? the final words of two walls, the fast and very catchy leading track of dj marcelle s new record, sum up an aesthetic almost lost in today s musical climate, where often a pleasing attitude and overproduced music sadly rule, even in so-called alternative circles. the quote comes from the late mark e. smith (1957 - 2018), legendary frontman of the fall, and is taken from some of the conversations marcelle had with smith over the years. smith is referring to a recording process but for marcelle his words stand for something bigger.

the caribbean house is a new billy bogus project. it’s the perfect meld of creepy atmospheres, sunset grooves, analog sensibilities and incessant rhythms. bogus leads this collective formed by federico bologna (ohmega tribe, technogod) and cristiano santini (disciplinatha, dish-is-nein,). this triumvirate of 90 s underground italian masterminds come from the world of electronica, noise rock and psychedelia. here they all combine to rise again rise and unite to create something entirely new.

this record comes with a version for every time and mood of a club night: jo pariotas cut of the original mix is the ideal warm up tune. flowing on a synthline that calls mike huckabys waldorf to mind, it is sweet and driving at the same time. the original mix by loveits own nico brun might be called „casual affair, but comes rolling on a phat wonky rhode that brings the groove! between the crunchy drums, a relaxed vocal snipped and warm synth unfold like the first rays of sunlight. the jk & lds reduction is punchy, minimal and dubby - with its pull and release kind of melody and the stuttered vocal sample it works perfect as a peak time dj tool. finally, the a.s.s. amnesia returns mix is something else entirely… you just have to experience it in its full 8 min breakbeat aphex twin-like glory. - morri313

you know when the dj drops something so special you’re mentally forced to ask for the track and the reply you get is ”its my own unreleased track”. that’s how i (art alfie) stumbled upon all three of these. about ten years ago i witnessed van rivers & the subliminal kid (peder mannerfelt) turn berghain upside-down with the dark techno epos ”mars attacks”. around the same time i had the luck to see nils westerlund boogle minds with the broken beat psychedelics of ”suspiria” at a stockholm open air. last but not least, a couple of years ago i heard ”thicker than blood” for the first time, like the sirens in greek mythology, it lured people on to the dance floor at stockholms classic summer hot spot f12. i’ve been playing these tracks ever since and im beyond happy i get to share them with the world at this point. //art alfie

finnitus 7-inch time! finnitus edits #3 is yet another serving of incredibly dodgy bargain bin tracks trimmed into submission and ready for the floor. side a s klabb & babb is a space disco heater, while side b s eroding in africa is your standard below-par bony m-esque afro flirt, made into something you can dance to.

there is something to be majestic about stalwarts of a certain flock coming together to be creative. the harder side of drum & bass didn’t have its own power formation until today. it’s as of this day that czech producer forbidden society, formed an alliance with two of his most respected peers to create 3rdknd. donny, katharsys and fs all have a strong lean to rhythmic textures, tough drum cuts and experimental fx works. just in time for the european festival season, the thunderous first effort has arrived, and it’s going to turn some heads.

opening track in the b kicks off proceedings in no uncertain fashion. it s 100% wall shaker material, the type of techno music best paired with strobe lights and towering speaker stacks. it mesmerises with its low-slung undulating bassline and detroit rhythms before giving way to some riotous old school essex stabs and sharp claps. no messing, this is a certified 3 am red light burner! track 2 chocolate biscuit accelerates proceedings! beginning with unfussy drums and a robotic, bleep-heavy melody driving it off into a wonderfully off-kilter direction. its arpreggio d rhythms may be brutish and wrestle a growling sense of menace out of the track, but the overall feel, however, suggests considerable care and attention has been paid to make it sound this way. there s clearly an uncommon musicality at play here to make something this complex feel so simple. the bpm drops next on jenny s hall but from the offset, there s enough funk and thrust in the motorised synth line to get bodies gently grooving without the beauty getting lost in the slower loop. this is blissed out, psychotropic techno - the kind of track where it feels like you re floating and falling at the same time, but all the while making sure you still remain fit for purpose on the dancefloor. ian blevins takes on remix duties this time and the berlin-based dj/producer offers up a sleek peak-time banger that fizzes, bubbles and percolates. he gives the rhythm on jenny s hall less space to swing and ties it to a tight motorik beat turning it into a slice of shiny, modern techno but with extra shoulder-checking force. its vibe drawing from a sense of outsider-party fun with a wry smile, and a knowing wink running throughout before bringing the package to a suitably left of field crescendo.

we’ve always loved their records, but this time around there’s something maybe even more incredible - this instant classic vibe that rings out right from the very first note, as the voices of the singers trade back and forth, and blend - and the instrumentation follows suit with this subtle weaving of acoustic and electric elements. remastered reissue on 180 gram vinyl.

in the era of the brand, kutiman is an anomaly. a musician who’s a video artist who’s a producer who’s an animator who’s also the unwilling star of one of israel’s most successful recent documentaries, his every record contrasts with whatever it was that came before. but that’s fundamental to his appeal: no one, not even him, really knows what to expect next. unsurprisingly, therefore, ‘don’t hold onto the clouds’ is no different, which means it’s like nothing he’s ever done. most artists would acknowledge this by working under pseudonyms, but kutiman is – yes, you’ve guessed it – different again. “if i changed my name every time i wanted to do something new,” he laughs, “i think i’d have too many names!”

gorje and izhevski return to all day i dream. finally! our exotic step brothers have their own elegant and distinctive sound that carefully balances musical emotion with signature beats. equally at home on the dance floor as well as your lounge floor in your spotify playlist. nikolai has been a long time fan of peter broderick and was given the opportunity to work with him last year. he (and dimitri) took peter s vocals and created something quite beautiful, both in ambient form as well as the 4:4 version. ta da! their new ep was well on it s way to completion. seeing as i m never satisfied though i insisted they stayed up late for another week and the result was l eternite. harking back to one of their first releases (calinerie) on the label this subtle melodic bomb will be heard as the sun sets or the sun rises across the universe this summer. if you re not already aware please check out the boys label too. shanti radio is a label we at all day i dream love.

with new track warschauerstrasse , claudio ricci has created an expansive seven minute workout of twisted synths and deep house drums. the first remix comes from long time techno heavyweight timo maas and the prolific and inventive basti grub. their singular remix speeds up the original and layers in fluttering toms and percussive sounds as well as broad, groaning synths and the distant sound of a bustling city at rush hour. sudam label boss and ibiza based artist kintar flips the track into something spacious and haunting. eerie keys and sweeping synths keep you on edge as the rubbery techno groove rolls on into the night. bulgarian based metodi hristov loves to experiment and has a distinctive techno style that gains support from the likes of richie hawtin, carl cox and adam beyer. in his hands the track becomes a peak time tech banger.

coming back for another round after his first ep for figure last summer, shlomi aber continues to explore different avenues of his multi-faceted sound, tying it all up in a nicely rounded package. setting the pace is driving opening track whistler, the producer showcasing his ability to craft something big but undoubtedly refined. he then lets old school drums cruise along gentle sways of washed out ambience, giving the deep heads something to really get into… back with more techno on the b-side, this time in true figure-style: lean, sharp, and utterly effective penetrate the system is sure to leave its mark and comes complete with an extended, separate intro, making for quite an experience. staying atmospheric to the end, aber chooses to step out in half-time, taking cues from dubstep as hollowed kicks carve out an endless tunnel that leads only ever deeper down the rabbit hole.
